Japanese and Kiwi Pairings to the Fore for Asia-Pacific

Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates: Japan’s Mamika Shinchi and Aira Nagasawa and New Zealanders Joshua Bai and Zack Swanwick were the standout performers for the Asia-Pacific on a thrilling opening day at the 2025 Bonallack and Patsy Hankins trophies.

Shinchi and Nagasawa returned two points as captain Joanne McKee’s Patsy Hankins team built a 7-3 lead against a power-packed European Golf Association line-up in the biennial Solheim Cup-style event.

In the men’s Bonallack Trophy, captain Rishi Narain’s side ended day one deadlocked at 5-5 with Bai and Swanwick contributing two outstanding victories.

“What a fabulous first day. The quality of the golf was outstanding,” said Narain, who saw his team win the morning foursomes session 3½-1½ before losing the afternoon fourballs by a similar margin.

McKee’s girls also led 3½-1½ following the foursomes and repeated that scoreline in the afternoon fourballs as the wind picked up at Al Hamra Golf Club.

“It was a brilliant performance from the girls,” said McKee, whose team are attempting to reclaim the Patsy Hankins Trophy that they lost in 2023 in Spain.

Shinchi and Nagasawa were exceptional, defeating the Irish duo of Beth Coulter and Aine Donegan 4&3 in the foursomes. The outcome was the same in the fourballs with the Japanese pair proving too strong for Donegan and England’s Patience Rhodes.

Bai and Swanwick were no less impressive, twice overcoming the all-German team of Tim Wiedemeyer and Peer Wernicke – 3&2 in the morning and 4&3 in the afternoon.

For the women, China teenager Zhou Shiyuan also had a 100 per cent record.

In the morning, she partnered Malaysian Mirabel Ting to a 3&1 triumph over Sweden’s Nora Sundberg and Louise Rydqvist. In the afternoon, she joined forces with Chinese Taipei’s Cindy Hsu Huai-chien and eked out a tense one-up success over Sundberg and Italian Francesca Fiorellini.

After being rested for the foursomes, Hong Kong China’s Sophie Han and China’s Ren Yijia also came up trumps for Asia-Pacific, beating Dane Marie Madsen and Ireland’s Coulter 2&1 in the lead match in the fourballs.

Meanwhile, Korean Jeong Min-seo and Hong Kong China’s Arianna Lau had the distinction of denying World Amateur Golf Ranking number one Lottie Woad of England a perfect start.

In the first match out in the morning, Woad and Rhodes enjoyed a decisive 6&5 win over the Thai duo of Eila Galitsky and Suvichaya Vinichaitham. But against Jeong and Lau, Woad and Spain’s Rocio Tejedo had to content themselves with a half,
