Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Aspiring professionals and leading amateurs from the ASEAN region will be given a priceless opportunity to tee-off in the LPGA Tour’s US$3 million Maybank Championship, via a ground-breaking ASEAN Qualifier.
Taking place on August 27-28 over the West Course at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC), the 36-hole qualifier will offer five spots in October’s Maybank Championship.
The qualifier is open to female professionals and amateurs from ASEAN countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. While professionals must possess a valid card from a recognised Tour (excluding the LPGA), amateurs are required to have a World Handicap System index of 2.0 or below.
Returning for its second edition from October 24-27, the Maybank Championship's total purse is the highest for a ladies golf event in Asia.
Last year’s tournament saw the world's leading players showcase their skills at KLGCC, culminating in an epic play-off in which France’s Céline Boutier edged out Thailand’s Atthaya Thitikul.
The nine-hole decider tied for the second-longest in LPGA Tour history, behind the 10-hole play-off at the 1972 Corpus Christi Civitan Open. Winner of the inaugural Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific championship in 2018, Atthaya turned professional in 2020 and has won three titles on the LPGA Tour.
Maybank’s involvement in top-level golf dates back to 2006 when it assumed title sponsorship of the Malaysian Open, jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour. This was followed by the men’s Maybank Championship from 2016 to 2019, also co-sanctioned by the same two Tours, but with a stronger focus on the ASEAN region. Following a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Maybank Championship made a triumphant return as an LPGA event in 2023.
