Malixi Withdraws with Recurrence of Back Injury

Augusta, Georgia, United States: World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) number four Rianne Malixi has withdrawn from the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA).

According to reports, the 18-year-old from the Philippines walked off the Champions Retreat course after playing four holes in her practice round on Tuesday.

Departing the venue, Malixi told a member of the Golf Channel team that she was suffering from low back pain, the same complaint that forced her withdrawal from last month’s Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) in Vietnam.

Malixi reportedly told the Golf Channel that she’s been struggling with low back pain since the age of 14 and was limited to hitting only 60 balls this week in practice.

Malixi, who had been drawn to play alongside Spaniard Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio and American Megha Ganne in Wednesday's first round at Champions Retreat, said she felt it was best to withdraw and fully recover rather than risk further injury

Winner of the US Women's Amateur and US Girls' Junior last summer, Malixi is scheduled to begin her freshman season at Duke University in the fall.

Also this year, Malixi has earned exemptions into the Chevron Championship and Amundi Evian Championship, both LPGA Tour Majors.

At Hoiana Shores Golf Club in last month’s WAAP, Malixi was three-over through five holes of the opening round when she retired.

“I am incredibly disappointed to have to retire from the Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific. It's a championship that I look forward to all year. I have a back strain and tried to compete, but unfortunately couldn't continue,” she said at the time.
