Hong Kong SAR, China: Last weekend marked the start of the one-year countdown to the 15th National Games, the country’s major celebration of sport that, for the first time, will see Hong Kong involved as a host.
The Hong Kong Golf Club will stage both the men’s and women’s golf tournaments as the National Games roll out from November 9-21, 2025 in venues spread across Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.
The Hong Kong, China squads are expected to be in the thick of the action at an event that features representatives drawn from the nation’s provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and special administrative regions.
“It’s a great honour for us all and it just shows how far golf has come in Hong Kong,” said Danny Lai, CEO at the Golf Association of Hong Kong, China (GAHKC).
“Our players regularly compete at the top, and the Hong Kong Golf Club has vast experience in staging major international events. So, to be involved in the National Games in this way is a major achievement for us all. It’s a great sign of recognition for us and for the city as we continue to grow the game.”
Last year’s Asian Games saw Taichi Kho create history by winning the individual gold medal and partnering Matthew Cheung, Jason Hak and Terrence Ng to the team bronze medal – illustrating how Hong Kong, China golfers can now compete with the best in the world.
The city’s best result in golf at the National Games came in Shenyang in 2013 with current GAHKC Head Coach Tim Tang, Hak, Wong Woon-man and Motin Yeung claiming silver, while Hak just missed out on an individual medial last time out at the Xian Qinling International Golf Course, when he finished fourth.
Overall, the SAR has competed in seven National Games, collecting 47 medals overall (11 gold, 13 silver and 23 bronze).
As well as golf, Hong Kong will next year be hosting basketball (men’s Under-22), cycling track, fencing, handball (men), rugby sevens, triathlon and beach volleyball, as well as bowling as a mass participation event.
